    Join your server

    Connect as usual. If your mods differ, ModGate shows what’s missing or needs changing.

    Download & review

    Required mods are selected for you. Pick your optional extras, then download supported packages together. Matching mods are reused.

    Restart. Rejoin. Play.

    Review the profile and choose Install and restart. After relaunching, join the server again.

The right mods, on the right side

Choose required, optional, server-only, or client-only mods. Server-only mods stay off your players’ download lists.

Allow players to bring extra client-side mods, or keep everyone on your approved list.

Versions and updates, your choice

Require chosen versions or accept newer client releases. Enable eligible startup updates for all mods or individual mods. Auto-update is off by default.

    Close Valheim & download

    Download ModGate’s install ZIP. If you don’t have BepInEx yet, install it separately first.

  2. 2

    Copy the BepInEx folder

    Extract the ZIP into your Valheim installation, merging its BepInEx folder. Keep the plugin and preloader in the folders shown.

  3. 3

    Launch & join a ModGate server

    ModGate will show the changes needed when your setup differs. Press Shift + F6 to open the panel anytime.

Both DLLs are needed. ModGate does not install or update BepInEx. Keep your existing configs and profiles when upgrading.

How do I download the mods for a Valheim server?

Install BepInEx separately and install the same ModGate version on the server and each player’s game. Join the server, choose any optional extras, then use Download and review to download supported required mods together. Review the prepared profile, install and restart, then rejoin the server.

Do both the server and players need ModGate?

Yes. Install the same ModGate version on the server and each player’s game. BepInEx must already be installed on both. ModGate needs to be installed before a player can see its setup prompt.

Can it download every mod automatically?

Automatic setup uses supported Thunderstore and Hexium packages. Nexus entries open a download page supplied by the server owner for manual installation. Unresolved packages may need the owner to correct their download mappings.

Will it download mods I already have?

Matching installed mods are reused. ModGate checks the server’s version rules, so it may offer a different version when the installed one is not accepted. Server owners can choose to accept newer client versions.

What happens when I switch servers?

You can keep four server profiles and an Offline profile, each with its own mods and configs. Activate the setup you need and restart. Loader settings and patchers remain global to that installation.

Does Install and restart reconnect me?

No. Windows can relaunch Valheim automatically, but you join the server again yourself. Other platforms or launchers can use installation on the next launch and a manual restart.

Are automatic updates enabled?

Server-mod automatic updating is off by default. Owners can enable eligible startup updates globally or per mod. ModGate does not automatically update itself or BepInEx.

Is it really free to use and edit?

Yes. ModGate is open source under the MIT license. You can use, edit, fork, and share it, including modified versions and commercial use. Keep the copyright and license notices with copies. Read the license.
